News & Notes

After a year of interesting issues, failbetter has garnered some rave reviews, a dedicated readership and, if we may be so bold, an extended family of remarkable writers and artists.  Starting with our debut issue, we were lucky enough to land an interview with the future winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, Michael Chabon.  Indeed, it set the tone for many successes to come.  Thus, in addition to plugging the best damn reading series in Brooklyn, the brain trust behind this online effort thought it best to share some further good news concerning those whose work has been displayed under our auspices...

Thus, the failbetter alumni bulletin...

·  Martha Cooley (Fall 2000) is completing final revisions on her second novel, to be published next year by Little, Brown.  Her essay, "Thirteen Ways of Looking at Onanism (With Dorothy and Blackbird)," will be published in Washington Square this winter.

·  Amy Holman (Fall 2000) will have her poetry collection, Vanishing Twin, published next spring by Mitki/Mitki Press.

·  Douglas Malone's (Fall 2000) art work is currently being exhibited at the Vorpal Gallery in San Francisco.  You may also view and purchase his latest paintings at artmecca.com.

·  Lee Upton's (Fall 2000) poetry has appeared in recent months in American Poetry Review and Fence. More of her poems are forthcoming in a future issue of the

American Poetry Review, as well as in Prairie Schooner and Verse. Her fiction has

appeared recently in River Styx, the Idaho Review, the Ohio Review, and Del

Sol Review (Webdelsol.com). Her contribution to the symposium on John

Ashbery in Field: Contemporary Poetry and Poetics is due out this fall.
