"My work as a figurative painter arises from a deep and abiding sense of isolation and detachment. Although representational, my paintings are not intended to depict specific people, events, or circumstances. Instead, they retain an element of calculated ambiguity which heightens the mystery of the pictures and precludes them from being pinpointed to a specific time, place, or situation. My paintings, while "realistic," are not simply depictions of recognizable imagery, but are carefully-arranged formal constructions or 'ordered systems'in which all the pictorial elements are deliberately designed to satisfy my own sense of balance and harmony.

"Throughout my creative process, I am primarily concerned with technical and formal matters such as draftsmanship, anatomy, composition, palette, etc. Each painting usually undergoes extensive transformation during the slow meticulous process of its development. Invariably, the fundamental basis for all of my work lies in drawing. It is my first love, the impetus from which all else arises."

Doug Malone specializes in figurative drawing and painting. His extensive background in Classical drawing and anatomy enables him to craft the image of the human form with meticulous precision, subtlety, insight and empathy. He regularly exhibits his paintings and drawings in galleries throughout America, and his work is held in private and corporate collections in the United States and Europe.

Malone's work has received numerous awards and recognition, most recently being featured in the book 100 Ways to Paint People and Figures, published by the Artists Magazine.

Malone studied at the College of William & Mary, The Corcoran School of Art, and the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He has taught anatomy and drawing at the Academy since 1998, and now teaches at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
